It’s no secret that sports and alcohol go hand in hand. We drink to celebrate when our favorite team wins. We drink to drown our sorrows when our favorite team loses. And thanks to the grand tradition of tailgating, we usually have a drink or two before the game even begins!
Drinking at sporting events can be lots of fun, but it often comes with a price: the next day’s hangover. The headache, nausea, and fatigue that follows a tailgate can be bad enough to make you swear off drinking — but it doesn’t have to be that way!
Lone Star IV Medics can help you enjoy your favorite tailgate beverages without enduring a nasty hangover.
When we talk about tailgating, most people think about hanging out with their friends before a football, baseball, soccer, or basketball game. As a result, those are the sports that come to mind when most folks think about drinking at sporting events. However, the link between alcohol and sports reaches much farther than that!
According to a survey from the sports betting site Lines, most sports fans have 3.7 drinks per event on average. However, MMA fans consume more alcohol per event than any other group, ranking just slightly higher than the average. The survey also revealed that esports fans are the group most likely to party hard during an event, with 53% of respondents claiming that they binge drink during tournaments.
But even though MMA and esports fans earned top rankings in this survey, it’s important to remember that excessive drinking happens at ALL sporting events — especially when there’s time to tailgate. Alcohol is a common sight at tailgate parties, and many people tailgate for several hours before the game. All that alcohol (plus whatever else you drink at the game) can wreak havoc on your body, leaving you dehydrated and feeling awful the next day.
When you’re tailgating, alcoholic drinks are almost inevitable. But your hangover doesn’t have to be! Here are a few tips to help you prevent a hangover at your next tailgate or night out.
You’ve probably heard that mixing your tailgate alcohol will lead to a worse hangover. Want to know a secret? That’s a myth! The fact is that drinking any alcohol in any order can lead to a hangover, but there are benefits that come with sticking to one type of drink.
Firstly, when you stick to one type of alcohol, you can better track how much you’ve had. It’s much easier to remember that you’ve had “two beers” than “a beer, two shots, a sip of someone’s cocktail…” Keep it simple so you can monitor your intake more easily.
Secondly, certain types of alcohol produce fewer hangover symptoms than others. These alcohols have fewer congeners, which are compounds that give alcohol a dark color AND contribute to hangover symptoms. For instance, if you stick to drinks like gin, vodka, or light-colored beer, you can limit the congeners in your system.
Carbonated beverages are very common when you’re drinking at sporting events. Who doesn’t love a Jack and Coke, gin and tonic, or even some extra-bubbly sparkling wine? Unfortunately, these drink options can pose one big problem for your body: the bubbles make your stomach expand.
When your stomach expands, your body can absorb much more alcohol than it would have otherwise. This heightens your body’s inflammatory response to the alcohol, making you feel worse than ever when the hangover sets in. To minimize your hangover in the morning, it’s best to keep your tailgate beverages carbonation-free!
Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that it increases urine production and dehydrates your body more quickly. This dehydration is a key factor behind many hangovers! When your body is low on fluids (not to mention vitamins and minerals), your body responds with headaches, low energy, and other symptoms we associate with a hangover.
Drinking water alongside alcoholic drinks at a tailgate can help minimize some of your hangover symptoms. By upping your water intake, you can help ensure that you stay hydrated no matter how much you drink!
